Air Quality and Active Transportation Modes: A Spatiotemporal Concurrence Analysis in Guadalajara, Mexico

The protection of pedestrians, cyclists, and public transportation passengers from environmental pollution is a global concern. This study fills the gap in existing knowledge temporal exposure to air Latin American metropolises. paper proposes methodology addressing relationship between two objects study, i.e., users active modes transport quality. new assesses spatiotemporal concurrence both with statistical analysis large open-access databases, promote healthy sustainable urban mobility. application empirical estimated number exposed poor quality episodes Guadalajara metropolitan area (Mexico) 2019. considered pollutants, ozone (O3) particulate matter (PM10), modes, cycling bus rapid transit (BRT). Spatiotemporal analyses were carried out geographic information systems, as well numeric computing platforms. First, big data used count for each mode within influence monitoring stations. Second, was obtained using index proposed by Environmental Protection Agency (USA) on an hourly basis. Third, calculated. In particular, Jalisco Atmospheric Monitoring System compared bicycle share system, known MiBici, line, Mi Macro Calzada. results showed that cyclists BRT considerable absolute terms, is, 208,660 users, while it marginal when total better categories area, who represented only 10%. To apply at scale, spatial distribution system should be improved, availability pedestrians conventional passengers.
